ARTICLE: Pulling Down the Silos within Your Church

July 23, 2018 Chip Minto

Silos look great out in the farm fields, but within the context of the Church, silos can limit your Church’s ability to effectively accomplish your mission.

Silos represent systems your Church and staff use to accomplish their calling.  In most churches, silos are in technology forms.  Your Children’s Ministry uses one software program to check-in the kids each service, while your Youth Department uses a totally different software program to keep track of the teens coming each week. Your finance team may use one system to track contributions and an entirely different program to manage your budget.  Your worship team takes advantage of one way to manage volunteers, while your Office Staff uses a completely different volunteer management system.

These silos spring up for a variety of well-intentioned reasons, but the end results are always the same: a misfire on your Church’s mission.  You misfire because you can’t see across the entirety of your Church family.  You misfire because the information is not shared across your departments, and you misfire because ultimately your Church’s mission is compromised by siloed information.

Bringing together all the information systems housed within your church under one roof can be a daunting task, but it is a task that must be done if a Church wants to fulfill its mission within their community.  A Church should seek out partners in this endeavor, whether it is a technology company or consultant, it must be someone with fresh eyes that can look across the breadth of what the Church uses and does, and then make recommendations as to how to break down those silos.  It will be tough, but when it is complete you will finally be able to as a Ministry, look across the full spectrum of your Church family, and really begin to see all the different pieces of the puzzle that makes up each family’s life within your church.

Having this view will then enable you to serve the families that call your Church “home” in a deeper and more meaningful way than ever before. Truly helping you to accomplish your mission.
